Friday Favourites

Friday Favourites #1

My first Friday Favourites post! Wootwoot! I’m so excited, I love list posts…and I especially love the fact that today is Friday and that means the freaking weekend is here!!

This week has been super busy and pretty awesome to tell you the truth. We’ve had lot’s of warm evenings filled with playing outside, had an impromptu dinner/play date with some friends, I’ve stayed on point with my 5:2 fasting diet plan (I can feel these pounds melting off), and tonight I get to hang out with my bestie with a glass of Rose! Life can’t get much better than this!

This Rose All Day wine glass is so cute…I’m definitely lusting after this and have added it to my Amazon wish list! You can find it here.

Confession: I don’t really believe the hype about weight loss water or detox water. BUT I believe in the amazing flavours of some of these recipes…and I do believe they’re an enticing way to get your daily water intake in! This is probably  my favourite water infused recipe.  It tastes so refreshing on a hot day, makes me feel like I’m melting away my worries at the spa on any day, and as someone who struggles with IBS…let me tell you…it works wonders on my chronically sore tummy!

And lastly, while I embark on this new fitness journey (yet again) I keep reminding myself that while it takes 21 days to form a habit, it actually takes 90 days to create a lifestyle. I’m determined to make it to that 90th day and beyond. Here’s a great article about the 21/90 rule.

Workout Wednesday #1

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve recommitted to eating healthy for weight loss purposes and I think I’m ready to dive into a fitness routine.

Those who know me know that I am pretty much an all or nothing kind of girl. Until I can’t hack it anymore, then I’m a full on quitter!

I’m not afraid to admit it.

Admitting it is the first step to squashing it right?!

Anyway. I’m a big fan of workout DVDs because I hate the gym. Not only do I hate people watching me grunt and struggle my way ungraciously through a set of squats and lunges, it’s just so stressful to get my ass to the gym. My husband works night shift and with two young kids, who are too young to stay at home alone but too old for the gym daycare…it’s impossible to leave the house. Most days I feel like I’m under house arrest but that’s another post for another day! Haha

So here I am, chained to a cubicle at the office during the day, and home bound in the evenings making sure my children don’t set the house on fire.

Basement workouts in the evening are my only option at this point.

I have a healthy library of Jillian Michaels and Beach Body DVD’s such as Country Heat, 21 Day Fix, Core de Force and Insanity. But I’m going rogue this time.

This extra weigh I’ve been carrying has made it harder and harder for me to kill it in those more intense workouts. So I’m going to ease myself back into fitness with good old fashion walking and maybe some jogging! I’ve dusted off my Fitbit and I’m ready to commit to those recommended 10,000 daily steps we hear so much about. And hopefully, in a few weeks, I’ll be ready to commit to something more intense!

So tonight, I’m lurking YouTube for a walking at home workout…any recommendations you think I should try? Hit me up in the comments 🙂

Motivation Monday

Motivation Monday #1

It’s so hard to get back into the swing of things when you’ve had such a long break. Blogging, cleaning schedules, meal planning/prepping, remembering to drink my daily intake of water, and blogging daily….they were all habits I once fostered. They’re habits that I desperately want to add back to my daily routine.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to go back to a weight loss technique that worked for me 6  years ago after I had my daughter. You can read about it here, but in a nutshell, the 5:2 Diet (also known as intermittent fasting) has been a game changer for me. The first week was rough, the second week wasn’t so bad. This third week, I can already feel my motivation wavering (which seems to be my pattern every time I try something new). But I know that it works and I want this weight loss so bad I can taste it. So this week, I’m using today, Monday, as a weekly reminder to recommit to my goals. I love fresh starts, why can’t I have them every week? By next week I’m hoping to have some good news to report back to you all…whether it be a loss on the scale, or a non-scale victory, I can’t wait to share some results!

What are you re-committing to today?

Thinking Out Loud Thursday #1

Happy #thinkingoutloud Thursday!

I’ve always seen the Thinking Out Loud link up hosted by Running With Spoons and I promised myself when I got back into blogging I’d link up with her group each week. So here’s what’s been on my mind this week….

We had the best Canada Day weekend. While the weather was hella hot (31+ degrees!!) we survived the heat thanks to being on the lake, and also, air conditioning in our trailer! Yup we have a trailer. And I’m not ashamed to say I could care less about roughing it, I love the comfort of having a tiny home/cottage on wheels and I’m proud if it! Any other glampers out there?!

This week also marked the kids first official week of Summer holidays…and we helped them celebrate by sending them to-day camp. No more bored kids getting into mischief this summer, camp is a legit life saver.

And finally, I’ve been talking all week about committing to getting fit, healthy, and back into my skinny jeans for the fall. You can read all about what I’m doing to lose this extra insulation (weight) over here in my post Starting Over: The Weight Loss Edition.

What are you #thinkingoutloud about today?

Weight Loss Journey

Starting Over: The Weight Loss Edition

I hate starting over. And over. And over. And over again. But you know what? Starting over can be a good thing. Sometimes, you need to struggle a little to know exactly what you want, but more importantly, what you DON’T want.

In this case, I’m starting my weight loss journey yet again. I don’t know why, in my 30’s, it’s harder to commit to a healthy lifestyle than when I was in my 20’s. Sure, I now have a career and a family that need my constant attention, but I’m older, I’m wiser, shouldn’t getting back on track and losing these pounds be easier??

I think sometimes what makes it harder to stick to a weight loss plan, is the sheer boredom of eating healthy all the damn time. And not wanting to stray from what you know works. I know things like Weight Watchers (which I love love love) work, as does the tried and true method of counting calories. But I get bored so damn easily. By day 3 of counting calories/points, I’m done. It’s tedious and exhausting. And it just effing sucks!

So I’m going back to what helped me lose my pregnancy baby weight with my second child. Back then, in 2012, a documentary from Dr. Michael Mosley was released in the UK about the power of intermittent fasting. You can read more about it here on his website, but the premise/his approach to weight loss is quite simple. You fast 2 days a week by eating 500 calories each day (men can eat 600 calories) and then you eat “normally” for 5 days. Now when he says “normally” he doesn’t mean pig out and eat like 3,000 calories. He recommends you stick to your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) on those days. You can track the calories, or you can ballpark it, it’s totally up to the person. Here’s a link to his free calculator to figure out what your TDEE should be on non fasting days.

Yesterday was my first fast day, and while I definitely went over the 500 calorie mark (I probably ate around 800 calories), it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I wasn’t starving all day. I didn’t have time to eat breakfast so around 11:00 I ate my lunch, later in the day I had a coffee and some fruit. I should have had a salad with a hard-boiled egg or something for dinner because I was hungry, and since I didn’t eat, I ended up snacking after the kids were in bed….hence why I ended up closer to the 800 calorie mark. But you know, you live and learn. My next fasting day is tomorrow, and I plan to have my meals planned out to help keep me on track. I know this method has worked for me in the past, so I’m excited to finally break this plateau and my nasty snacking at night habit too!

Have you heard of intermittent fasting? Have you tried it before? Share your experiences in the comments below.

Gym Hair Don’t Care: 5 FitGirl Hairstyles I Love

One of my biggest pet peeves when I’m working out, is when my hair elastic malfunctions and I can feel my ponytail coming undone during high intensity moves like jumping jacks, high knees etc. I’m always in awe when I see these girls on my workout DVDs (like 21 Day Fix and Country Heat) and their hair literally does not move. So I scoured the net looking for a few I wouldn’t mind trying and I realized sharing is caring so here you go: 5 fitgirl hairstyles I love and think you will too!
I remember when my mom used to do this to my hair in elementary school….but it’s still so cute I’ll have to add this to my ponytail rotation! Hop over to Hair Romance for the tutorial.

I also love this adorably messy top knot courtesy of Cosmopolitan UK.

The perfect messy bun…in 7 steps…now that’s a commitment. Buuuuuut it’s so cute I think I can handle it. Try it.

Love this simple braid and messy pony! Tutorial can be found here.

And for when you just want to spice up a regular pony, you could always go the DIY braided headband route – made out of old t-shirts! Here’s the tutorial from Rabbit Food for my Bunny Teeth.
